Defiance Vineyard on Felton Road was developed in 2012 and had its first small harvest in 2015.
The land on which the vineyard sits had never been mined or used for a vineyard before although it is one of the best sites along what is probably Central Otago's most famous wine growing road. Most of the Defiance site has a layer of good quality loam soils overlaying a considerable depth of schist gravels laid down some 450,000 years ago by glaciation. A small corner of the vineyard has clay based soils similar to Domain Road's pipeclay soils.
Defiance vineyard is managed by Graeme and Gillians son Steven. Currently certified as sustainable it is also undergoing certification to become fully organic.
