Vintage 2013 - 18 Apr 13
I have a few rare moments to sit at my desk so thought it time to reflect on the vintage and the last 6 months or so. Our Defiance vineyard in Felton Road has now been through its first season and has shown excellent potential with strong growth throughout the season, reminiscent of Domain Road at the same stage. Of course the grass and weeds have enjoyed themselves as well so regular attention has been required. I often say site selection is key to making great wine and we are I believe blessed with two of the best.We also opened our doors to the public over January and had the opportunity to greet many new and existing customers. Gillian and I have decided to repeat this next summer as well. It is difficult for us to be open all year round at the moment but we are open by appointment and I make an effort to meet people as much as I can.
Harvest has been slow at Domain Road this year but the quality has been excellent. The Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris are in and we will be getting the remaining Pinot Noir into Peters care over the next 2 days. Gillian is in charge of all our quality checking and reports there is very little not meeting standard, good pickers are a big help here. I have been busy making sure the logistics of bins, trucks, tractors, and getting everything to the winery has been working smoothly, aided this year by old Special (see photo) our 1960 Bedford truck, fun all round for me. Its just such a long wait now to get everything in the bottle!! - Graeme.
