Central Otago was affected by frost on the 4th of November followed by another on Tuesday the 6th. There has been a lot of damage reported around the district but only time will tell what the extent of this really is. At Domain Road we have some protection for our Pinot Noir from a wind machine and this proved reasonably effective with only small amounts of leaf damage in one corner. Our Riesling has had minor damage and our lower Sauvignon Blanc moderate damage. Our upper block of Sauvignon Blanc was unaffected. The real issue with frost is not always immediately visible. Leaf damage will show up quickly but damage to the flowers will be the real decider on this years crop. We also have to work to protect next years crop as some damage can affect this as well. An interesting start to the season but at least we something in our cellars to drown our sorrows with. Defiance vineyard, just planted was thankfully untouched. - Graeme.
